A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.
Have you ever been in a situation when all you want to do is stop and run? That moment when you know you are stepping out of your comfort zone into something scary, worrying or overwhelming and you think to yourself ‘”is this worth it, or shall I stay safe, where I know what happens and how I feel?”
This week has been THE BIGGEST comfort zone step out so far. Well I suppose moving to the other side of the world was a pretty big step out of the comfort zone, but you know me, I’m not one to stay put! I always like to push myself. So, the more you get yourself out of your comfort zone, the stronger you are the next time.
This week I have moved into a new house. STRESS and OVERWHELM have been my best friend for the last two or three weeks. The whole “will it work?”, “what’s going to go wrong”, “what if it all comes crumbling down around me” were the sentences playing over and over in my head this week.
Moving to a new house is stressful enough, added to that, being on the other side of the world adds to the stress, and trying to keep a full-time job and coaching business going! This has stretched me personally, not only with my patience, but my sheer determination to keep going and staying in the ‘MAKE THIS SHIT HAPPEN’ zone, rather than staying comfy in that comfort zone.
Why should we push ourselves to get out of our comfort zone Beckie?
Well, I will tell you why…
Firstly, by NOT taking risks, you will never actually discover your true self. This is something I came across when I started my coaching business earlier this year. I have had many careers in my short (but wow I feel old today) life, some of which I’ve loved. However, I’ve never felt that I found THE ONE. When pushing through my comfort zone earlier this year, at the scary moment when I signed up to begin my coaching qualification, is where I found my TRUE SELF.
Living in your comfort zone is all about doing what is safe and easy: you know the outcome already! If you’re afraid to take a few doing something that scares you, or, doing something where you’re not sure of the outcome, you can never really understand who you truly are.
We find out a lot about ourselves when we take risks. We find out what we’re made of. We discover what makes us tick and begin to see that part of ourselves deep inside; our true self, the one that holds the wisdom and power most of us are unaware of!
When you can connect to your TRUE SELF, you open doors to change, growth, progress, love, and understanding that cannot be found inside your comfort zone.
My second reason is that it ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GROW, whilst stuck inside your comfort zone. You can’t grow as a human being by following the path that’s already paved. When pushing yourself and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, you see and experience things you may never have if you’d stayed still!
With knowledge and growth comes an increased ability to do things in your life you never dreamed possible. I know it can sometimes it can feel that saying ‘making your dreams come true’ can make you pull a funny face, but this stuff truly can. With a POSITIVE MINDSET and THE WANT to push yourself out of your comfort zone, you really can make your dreams come true… we will do more about MINDSET next week!
My third reason to step outside your comfort zone, is that each time you do it, you develop the skills that help you tackle difficulties head on, rather than walking away from or postponing potential INCREDIBLE and life changing goals.
One scenario that I’ve seen happen time and time again, is one where we’re faced with a difficult situation in our lives and instead of facing it head on and overcoming it, we take a step back into our comfort zone. This is a major red flag when it comes to being able to achieving the goals in life.
Your life goals and dreams are important. When difficult times crop up, and they will (we can all agree to that), you need to be BRAVE enough to keep moving forward. It’s really easy to just jump back into your routine but postponing your goals now will make them more difficult to achieve later on. Please trust me and find the courage to push through the hard times – you’ll be glad you did!
My last reason is simply this, THE UNKNOWN is where dreams are made.
Ooooo…. the fear of the unknown. The phrase everybody dreads but loves to say! Really though, the ‘unknown’ can be a magical place where dreams come true and life happens. Whereas your comfort zone is a predictable place where dreams can die and life stalls.
It’s pretty simple when you think about it, stay within your comfort zone and keep hoping, wishing, and dreaming of a better life, or take a step into the unknown and create your own version of how you want your life to look.
Go on – take the step!
